The contribution of biofuels to achieving the 2030 climate objectives

On behalf of the Association of the German Biofuels Industry (VDB), DIW Econ is investigating the question of what contribution biofuels will make to emission reductions in the transport sector by 2030.

The source materials for biofuel production – this applies both to cultivated biomass and to the source materials of waste-based and advanced biofuels – can only be sustainably provided in limited quantities.

Herculean task: evidence-based regulation in the telecommunications sector

Report in Wirtschaftsdienst, 99th volume, 2019, issue 2, pp. 113-118

The current economic policy debates on the faltering expansion of a nationwide fibre-optic infrastructure and the auctioning of 5G mobile frequencies show that the regulation of telecommunications markets in Germany is facing significant challenges.

Digitisation: Growth potential for companies in the capital region

As part of the SME survey conducted by Berliner Sparkasse 2018, DIW Econ recorded the current status and development of digitisation in companies in the capital region.

The digitisation index was determined for the first time in 2017. With the SME Survey 2018 it is now available for the second time, so that trends in digital transformation over time can be identified.

Ukraine has been experiencing an economic decline for ten years, cushioned by international financial assistance. Ukraine has been experiencing an economic decline for the last ten years, which has been alleviated by international financial aid. For 20 years Western donors have been pushing for market-economy reforms in the energy sector, which Ukraine has repeatedly delayed or only half-heartedly implemented. The country is still the most energy-intensive economy in Europe.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of regulation in the telecommunications sector

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) has commissioned DIW Econ and DICE Consult to develop conceptual bases and methodological procedures for ex-post evaluations as well as proposals for ex-ante impact assessment procedures to assess the effectiveness of regulation in the telecommunications sector. In the future, empirical findings can thus be used to a greater extent in the selection and design of regulatory instruments in advance, and the success of the measures taken can be assessed more precisely in retrospect.
