Tourism as an economic factor in Berlin – TSA 2023
How significant is tourism for Berlin’s economy? The updated study, ‘Tourism as an Economic Factor in Berlin – TSA 2023’, provides a comprehensive answer to this question. Using the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), which is based on international standards set by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, the study systematically records tourist consumption expenditure and its resulting effects on value added and employment.
In 2023, the value of tourism consumption was €15.1 billion. This represents a nominal decline of 10.5 per cent compared to the pre-pandemic level in 2019. This decline was mainly due to the loss of aviation services resulting from the relocation to Brandenburg Airport (BER). Around two-thirds of expenditure was accounted for by private travel, while business travel accounted for around 21 per cent. The MICE segment alone generated €1.1 billion.
Overall, tourism generated a gross value added of €8.4 billion through direct and indirect consumption, and secured around 224,800 jobs. This equates to approximately one in ten people employed in Berlin being directly or indirectly dependent on tourism.
Despite the moderate decline in tourism compared to pre-pandemic levels, the results show that it remains a key economic factor and driver for numerous industries in the capital. Overall, tourism generated €8.4 billion in direct and indirect gross value added and secured around 224,800 jobs. This equates to approximately one in ten people employed in Berlin being directly or indirectly dependent on tourism.
