Ensuring financial provision for the dismantling of nuclear power plants and the disposal of radioactive waste

The operation and dismantling of nuclear power plants generate large quantities of radioactive waste. The operators of nuclear power plants are responsible for final disposal.

The study outlines how financial provision can be made for the dismantling of nuclear power plants and the disposal of radioactive waste in Germany. Above all, a public-law fund should be established for this purpose.

In particular, the waste producers also have a financial responsibility. Currently, the companies operating nuclear power plants have set aside provisions of 36 billion euros for this purpose, but these are not insolvency-proof and are not protected against social restructuring.
