Distribution grids in European comparison

Guest article in bne-kompass 01/2011: Focus on distribution grids – bne calls for transparency and efficiency

As a result of federalism and territorial monopolies from the time before the liberalisation of the energy market, the corporate landscape in the distribution network sector in Germany resembles a patchwork quilt. According to information from the Federal Network Agency and the BDEW, there were a total of 872 operators of electricity distribution networks and 710 operators of gas distribution networks in 2009. Most of these companies are small or medium-sized operators with a maximum of 100,000 customers. The share of large distribution network operators in the total number of these companies is rather small, at just under 10 percent for electricity and about 30 percent for gas.
